Taipei Outdoors - walks, hikes and bike paths
Taipei is surrounded by mountains so hiking with city views is usually a simple MRT trip away.
Elephant Mountain Trail - 象山步道
Elephant Mountain (Xiang Shan) Trail offers close up views of Taipei 101 and as well as over eastern downtown Taipei. The trail can be completed in around 2 hours but allow yourself more time to take in the stunning views. At the end of the trail, you can either take a bus or walk back to Xinyi District.
Jiantan Trail - 劍潭山親山步道
Fantastic views over the northern end of downtown Taipei, the Grand Hotel, as well as Shilin and Beitou. About a 1-2 hour walk with lots of smaller and connecting trails. The path is well signed with maps along the way.
Keelung River Bicycle Trail - 基隆河自行車道
The Keelung River Bicycle Trail runs along both sides of the Keelung River, with paths on both sides running for around 17-18km. Bikes can be rented (see marker on map).
Tianmu Trail - 天母古道
This popular forest trail follows an old water pipeline. The path starts at the end (top) of Zhongshan Road (Section 7) and runs for approximately 2.6km. Along the way expect to see Formosan macaques and some fruit plantations.
Wulai - 烏來
Set amongst the scenic mountains south of central Taipei, Wulai is popular for its hotsprings, waterfalls and walks. The Wulai Atayal Museum is also in the area and features exhibits on Taiwan's indigenous culture.
Xiao You Keng - 小油坑
The sulfurous gases rising from Xiaoyoukeng fumaroles makes quite a unique site, especially so close to Taipei. Walking paths in the area offer great views, with some extended hikes possible.
Yangmingshan National Park - 陽明山國家公園
A natural getaway from Taipei with some nice forest trails, waterfalls and Taipei's famous floral clock.
