Taipei attractions

The best way to visit most of Taipei's landmarks and attractions is to use the MRT (Taipei Metro), it is fast, efficient and reasonably priced.


Taipei 101 - 台北101
Now the world's second tallest building, Taipei 101 offers great views of Taipei and the surrounding mountains from the indoor observation deck (89F). The outdoor (91F) observation deck is currently closed. The upmarket Taipei 101 Mall and a large food court are located at the base of the building.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall - 中正紀念館
One of Taipei's older landmarks, this huge structure was built in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, the former President of the Republic of China. The surrounding area consists of traditional Chinese gardens, a great place to find some peace and quiet.

Da-an Forest Park - 大安森林公園
The largest area of open space in downtown Taipei. Da-an Forest Park takes up a whole city block and is home to lots of tree lined paths.

Danshui - 淡水
As Danshui is a waterfront escape for much of Taipei it gets busy on weekends and public holidays. The area is home to Danshui Old Street (淡水老街) with stalls selling local street foods and Taiwan produce. Danshui waterfront promenade, a mix of eatries, stalls and sideshow type games. Danshui Fishermans Wharf (淡水漁人碼頭) - with a boardwalk, restaurants and Lovers Bridge. Also the previously Spanish, Dutch and British controlled Fort San Domingo (Hongmao Cheng 紅毛城), now a museum. Danshui cross river ferry to Bali township.

Dihua Jie - 迪化街
This bustling historic area is famous for its stores selling Chinese medicines, herbs and traditional products. The street is particularly busy and colourful around traditional celebrations such as Chinese New Year.

Hell Valley and Beitou - 地熱谷
This park is popular with locals for its steaming springs where water temperatures approach 100°C. Located in New Beitou Park (新北投公園). Numerous hotspring resorts are located in the surrounding Beitou area.

Longshan Temple - 龍山寺
This busy working temple was originally built in 1738. Longshan is Taipei's oldest temple and one of the most popular temples for tourists, and is located in Wanhua district, one of Taipei's older residential areas.

Maokong Cable Car - 貓空纜車
Just a MRT ride away, Maokong Gondola travels 4 km over sub-tropical forest to reach an elevation of over 300 metres at Maokong station. The ride offers views of Taipei 101, Taipei's southern suburbs and the surroudning forest and hills. Be prepared for long waits, especially on weekends and holidays.

Presidential Palace - 總統府
Home to the President's offices, this red brick building is a fine example of Japanese colonial architecture in downtown Taipei. No entry permitted.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall - 國立國父紀念館
A memorial to the founder of the Republic of China and one of the largest open areas in downtown Taipei. The traditional Chinese architecture hall was completed in 1972.

Taipei County Observation Deck - 台北縣觀景瞭望台
For a free view of Taipei visit the Taipei County Government Building in the southern suburb of Banciao. Views can be had of downtown Taipei, surrounding mountains and Taipei 101.

Xing Tian Gong - 行天宮
Xing Tian Gong is the most popular temple amongst locals in downtown Taipei. Quite easy to get to by bus.

228 Memorial Park - 二二八和平公園
Originally named Taipei Park, this area was Taiwan's first major urban park. The park's name was changed in memory of the 228 clashes that occurred between civilians and the government in 1947.

Fort San Domingo - 紅毛城 (聖多明哥城)
The red walled Fort San Domingo was built by the Dutch on the former site of a Spanish fort in 1644. The buildings later served as the British consulate, and are now a museum. The fort has recently been refurbished.

Miramar Ferris Wheel - 美麗華摩天輪
Located in the Miramar shopping complex, the 100m tall wheel offers views of the surrounding neighbourhood and Taipei. A full circle takes 17 minutes. The centre also has an IMAX cinema. Located in the northern Taipei suburbs near Neihu.
