Hong Kong on a budget

A Symphony of Lights

Promoted as the "world's largest permanent light and sound show". The display takes place on both sides of the harbour, with around 40 participating major buildings.

Happy Valley Racecourse

Even for non-race goers, a visit to Happy Valley at night is a chance to experience the excitement that surrounds a horse race in Hong Kong. The racecourse is in a stunning location with nearby apartment buildings towering over the track. Check the website for race and event details. The racecourse is also home to the Hong Kong Racing Museum.

Hong Kong Double Decker Trams

Jump on a tram from Central to Wan Chai. Or choose from 6 other main routes. Trams run along the north side of Hong Kong Island, including Central, Wanchai, Happy Valley and North Point. A cheap flat fare (adults $2) is charged regardless of distance (payable by coin or Octopus card).

Hong Kong Park

Literally a green oasis in the middle of the city. This 8 hectare park features landscaped gardens, a man made waterfall, hilly paths, badminton and squash facilities, the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware and HK's largest walk through bird aviary.

Shek O

One of Hong Kong's most attractive beaches. Shek O is a small village on the south east side of HK Island. Also close to some excellent walking trails, including Dragons Back.

Tai Chi by the Harbour

Try taichi for free with Hong Kong Island and harbour as a backdrop. Ring to confirm availability.

The Peak

At 552m above sea level, The Peak offers stunning views over Central, the Mid Levels, Hong Kong's harbour and Kowloon. Also here is The Peak Tower (a mid sized shopping mall), numerous dining options with views and the Sky Terrace lookout (HK$30/10). To get away from the crowds simply follow the main walking path eastward for a few minutes. Continue to take the path down through lush forest to get to Mid-Levels.

Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront

The TST waterfront offers stunning views of Hong Kong harbour and Hong Kong Island skyline. The Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Space Museum, Star Ferry, Avenue of Stars and the old Clock Tower are all located here. The area is also the best place to catch a view of the "A Symphony of Lights" nightly performance. Free taichi lessons also occur along here several mornings each week.
