A Symphony of Lights
Promoted as the "world's largest permanent light and sound show". The display takes place on both sides of the harbour, with around 40 participating major buildings.
Big Buddha / Po Lin Monastery
Tian Tan Buddha is the world's tallest (34 metres high) outdoor seated bronze Buddha. Walk to the base of the statue for great views over Lantau and the South China Sea. Located next to Big Buddha is the busy Po Lin Monastery. Also nearby: Ngong Ping Village, Ngong Ping cable car and Lantau hiking paths.
Che Kung Temple
HK's most famous temple, originally built 300 years ago, the current temple was rebuilt in the early to mid 1990s.
Cheung Chau
Temples, a nice beach and lots of seafood make Cheung Chau a popular weekend small island getaway. Cheung Chau is located south west of Hong Kong Island, near Lantau Island, and has a population of around 30,000.
Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware
This Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware is a division of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and has a wide collection of tea ware, as well as Chinese ceramics. The museum is located in Flagstaff house, built in 1846, and located on the northern edge of Hong Kong Park.
Happy Valley Racecourse
Even for non-race goers, a visit to Happy Valley at night is a chance to experience the excitement that surrounds a horse race in Hong Kong. The racecourse is in a stunning location with nearby apartment buildings towering over the track. Check the website for race and event details. The racecourse is also home to the Hong Kong Racing Museum.
Hong Kong Disneyland
The smallest of the Disneyland parks, Hong Kong Disneyland brings together Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland and Main Street, USA.
Hong Kong Museum of Art
A large collection of historic Chinese art, calligraphy and antiques, as well as local Hong Kong works.
Hong Kong Wetland Park
The 61-hectare wetland park plays host to migratory birds and features several themed walks and a wetland discovery centre.
Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens
A range of landscaped gardens, animal enclosures and a children's playground.
Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car
The 5.7km (25-minute ride) cable car journey travels between Tung Chung and Nong Ping (over 500m above sea level). Great views of Lantau Island, the sea and HK Airport. The Big Buddha statue is also located next to Ngong Ping Village.
Ocean Park
Hong Kong's popular homegrown theme park has loads of rides with an emphasis on conservation and education.
Repulse Bay
An upmarket residential area with a nice beach, stunning views, restaurants and shopping. Can be crowded on weekends.
Shek O
One of Hong Kong's most attractive beaches. Shek O is a small village on the south east side of HK Island. Also close to some excellent walking trails, including Dragons Back.
Stanley
Stanley Market is a popular tourist market, Stanley Main Street is lined with restaurants and bars, while the Stanley waterfront has undergone a recent renovation with a new boardwalk and some nice views of Stanley Bay and the surrounding hills. Part of Stanley's attraction is the bus trip over the steep and windy roads that cross Hong Kong Island. Buses go to/from Central, Kowloon and many other locations. Nearby St Stephens Beach is a pleasant and scenic 20 minute walk east of Stanley.
Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery
Built in the 1950's, the Monastery has an amazing collection of Buddha's (currently more than 13,000). Entry to the Monastery is by path, up 400 steps.
The Peak
At 552m above sea level, The Peak offers stunning views over Central, the Mid Levels, Hong Kong's harbour and Kowloon. Also here is The Peak Tower (a mid sized shopping mall), numerous dining options with views and the Sky Terrace lookout (HK$30/10). To get away from the crowds simply follow the main walking path eastward for a few minutes. Continue to take the path down through lush forest to get to Mid-Levels.
The Peak Tram
A scenic and touristy way to get to Victoria Peak. The Peak Tram has operated since 1888 and runs from Central, via Mid-Levels to Victoria Peak (552m above sea level).
Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront
The TST waterfront offers stunning views of Hong Kong harbour and Hong Kong Island skyline. The Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Space Museum, Star Ferry, Avenue of Stars and the old Clock Tower are all located here. The area is also the best place to catch a view of the "A Symphony of Lights" nightly performance. Free taichi lessons also occur along here several mornings each week.
